Deadline: 31st January 2026

We invite artists, architects, researchers, collectives, and interdisciplinary practitioners to join a residency focused on reinterpreting the legacies of architectural modernism. Modernism Revisited approaches 20th-century architecture not as a closed chapter, but as a diverse cultural, technological, and territorial layer shaped by different climates, political systems, and social visions.

The residency takes place in the Trenčín region, a landscape marked by modernist planning and post-industrial change. Participants will explore how modernist buildings, infrastructures, and environments can be read, adapted, or reactivated in response to today’s ecological and social realities. Themes include sustainable regeneration, monument protection, and contemporary interpretations of modernist spatial thinking.

Activities and discussions will engage with three lenses:

Typology — modernist spatial models and their reinterpretation;

Topography — relationships between modernism, landscape, and community;

Strategy — current practices, educational approaches, and policies shaping modernism’s future.

The residency seeks proposals that open new ways of understanding and transforming modernist heritage for the 21st century.

Modernism Revisited is part of the Trenčín 2026 program. Trenčín 2026 is financially supported by the City of Trenčín, the Trenčín Self-Governing Region, and the Ministry of Culture of the Slovak Republic. The European Union is a project partner.
