On Friday, 22 August, from 4:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., the northern part of Palackého Street in Trenčín will be transformed into a pedestrian zone with music, water features and a pleasant atmosphere. The small city festival Palackého Live will show that the space, which today serves mainly for parking and transit, has the potential to become a lively and attractive meeting place.
The street as a space for people
Palackého naživo follows on from the successful Korzo Palackého event and brings a new perspective to the northern part of the street. For one evening, cars and traffic noise will disappear to make way for places to relax, listen to music and discuss the future of public spaces. The festival is an invitation to think about how we can change public spaces to make them more pleasant and safer.
Palackého Live is another step on the long road to transforming this street into a quieter and more welcoming space that will serve people first and car traffic second. The planned change is part of a strategy to reorganise traffic in the city centre to create better conditions for living and moving around the city.
“We want people to experience Palackého Street differently again – not as a car park, but as a place to meet, relax and have fun. We believe that this event will inspire lasting changes that will make Trenčín a livelier and more accessible city,” says Stanislav Krajči, director of the Trenčín 2026 team.
The festival also brings a creative challenge
One of the highlights of the festival will be the opening of the parklet – an artistic and architectural intervention with seating and greenery. The parklet is a temporary solution that hints at how Palackého Street could change in the future. “This small change symbolises our ambition to make the street a place for people, not just cars,” adds Krajči.
The event will be complemented by a public intervention prepared by young people during Place Camp – Summer School of Place Making. In the days leading up to the festival, participants will learn how they can change public space through creativity and collaboration. Together with experts, they will design and implement a small project directly on Palackého Street, which visitors will be able to see with their own eyes during the event.
Music picnic and summer cinema with a film event
The evening’s atmosphere will be rounded off by a concert by The Youniverse, a band that brings a fresh mix of blues, rock and modern energy. The trio consists of singer Tammy Nižňanská, guitarist and producer Jerguš Oravec and drummer Adam Olexík. The concert will start at 7 p.m. on Palackého Street as part of the SUMMER CONCERTS series.
Another big attraction of the programme will be the summer cinema, which will screen the award-winning film Vlny (2024) by director Jiří Mádl, set against the backdrop of the Prague Spring and the subsequent invasion of Warsaw Pact troops. The film has received considerable attention thanks to its title song “Vlny” by Ewa Farna and its nomination as the Czech candidate for the Oscar for Best International Feature Film.
In addition to music and film, visitors can look forward to a discussion entitled “Create the City”, creative workshops, a dance workshop, non-alcoholic drink tastings and games for children and adults.
