Biopatina workshop Trenčianske Teplice

Do you know what a biopatina is? What significance does it hold for us, for architecture, and for the urban environment?

Discover the microscopic environments and biotopes of the city together with artist and researcher Adam Hudec and architect Natália Štundová. Together, they form the Dusts Institute and focus on researching the surfaces of urban spaces and environments.

What colors can biopatinas have? Biopatinas are composed of various types of algae, bacteria, and fungi, with each of these microorganisms capable of producing specific colors. We point out where these naturally occurring stains appear, what they are, where they come from, and what their significance, function, and potential are. What makes a façade visually unattractive? How should architectural surfaces look – and why?

Participants of the workshop will explore biopatinas on objects and buildings in the spa park of the town Trenčianske Teplice, learn how to identify them, and understand their potential and characteristics that contribute to shaping urban space.

Meeting point: Spa park near the Machnáč Sanatorium

The workshop will be complemented by Zuzana Duchová from the Jaromír Krejcar Society, with a lecture on an icon of functionalist architecture – the Machnáč Sanatorium.
