About the artist:
Juraj Toman was born in 1985 in Trenčín. He graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava (Klaudia Kosziba’s studio) and from the Academy of Arts in Banská Bystrica, where he received the ArtD (Doctor of Arts) degree in 2014.
He not only focuses on his own artistic work but also shares his experience with students of drawing and painting at the Department of Art Creation and Education at Constantine the Philosopher University in Nitra.
The curator of the exhibition, Martin Kratochvíl, wrote about the upcoming solo exhibition “Priezory.” The exhibition is part of the project cycle “With Roots in Trenčín,” within the European Capital of Culture 2026 Trenčín.
The openings in the paintings reveal new views – illusory windows into different realities, moments, and perspectives that blur the boundaries between various genres and spatiotemporal layers. The methods I develop have the character of an absurdly directed play. Through constant layering and overlapping of the illusory world of painting, I create a complex spatial fiction that tests the viewer’s attention. I realized that another image might subtly exist within a painting. Every image – whether digital, analog, or mental – stimulates imagination while erasing its edges because the abstract mind has no boundaries. I proceed by looking at the painting I plan to overpaint, imagining which part of the studio I will insert into it and which part of the original painting will remain – so that it functions as an image within an image. These pictorial planes naturally complement one another.
Sometimes it’s immediately visible; other times, the viewer needs more time to realize that there is another image within the painting.
