Film Club Special: If Pigeons Turned to Gold

On 6 October, the Youth Film Club will become a film club for everyone – join us for an exclusive preview screening of Pepa Lubojacki’s documentary If Pigeons Turned to Gold, a film about a complicated sibling bond that won the Berlinale Award for Best Documentary.

Formally playful and free of sentimentality, the film combines diary footage with a family archive brought to life using AI. Through filmmaking, Pepa tries to understand why her beloved older brother and two cousins are experiencing homelessness and struggling with addiction. She seeks to understand not only their lives, but also their family relationships, shared past and the circumstances that brought them to where they are today. She asks where love ends and control begins, and what respect truly means: trying to save someone, or letting them go.

Pepa Lubojacki (they/she) lives in Prague and works in documentary filmmaking. Their work focuses primarily on gender binaries and stereotypes, addiction and intergenerational trauma.

The screening will be followed by a discussion and Q&A with the filmmaker and guests who also work professionally with issues related to addiction.
