About the author:
Igor Kalný (1957, Trenčín – 1987, Bratislava) belongs to the artists whose work cannot be perceived separately from their life story, lived in the atmosphere of lack of freedom during the normalization period. It is the story of a young man for whom expressing creative unrest, in both its playfulness and seriousness, was an urgent need and a unique way of reflecting the world, and it still resonates today.
He entered the unofficial art scene at the end of the 1970s as a twenty-year-old author open to new impulses, whose work was close to the generation of older colleagues from the circle of analytical tendencies. His artistic path, influenced by conceptual approaches, moved on the border of music, poetry, private performances, happenings, painting and drawing. From structure drawings, through stamp drawings (with which he illustrated a samizdat edition of Orwell’s Animal Farm), to cycles created by tracing everyday objects and parts of his own body (body drawings).
His extensive work consists of several hundred pieces created during a short but intense decade of persistent creative activity between 1977 and 1987. It developed mainly through the dominant media of drawing and action, which form the core of the exhibition at the M. A. Bazovský Gallery in Trenčín.
Photos and video recordings will be taken at the event and may be published later.
