A shared reading event within the volunteer program of the European Capital of Culture Trenčín 2026.
Ján Smrek is one of the most widely read and translated Slovak poets. Do you recognize this excerpt from his poem The Leaves Are Falling?
“So autumn’s here—should we be sad because of it?
Nonsense indeed. Let the forest moan,
and let the wind wail through the branches.
We came to these forest depths
to hear the flute-playing of the wind—
yet our youthful spirits came along with us.”
The poem is from the collection The Poet and the Woman, which expresses autumn–winter melancholy, feelings of separation and sadness over change, but also optimism for the future.
This time, we will be reading poetry and sharing many interesting facts about the poet’s life.
When: Thursday, November 20, 2025, from 3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Where: Sihoť Day Centre, Osvienčimská 1720/3, Trenčín
