Rankov is a writer who doesn’t like to “look away.” In his books, he opens topics of historical memory and the ways in which we can — or cannot — come to terms with the past. His stories are often about ordinary people placed in extraordinary circumstances, about chance that changes the course of a life, and about everything we carry with us, even when we’d prefer to carry nothing at all.
Pavol Rankov is a recipient of the European Union Prize for Literature, the author of short stories, novels, and texts that read as if written “from a place where it hurts — but where it’s worth looking.”
He will speak with Silvester Lavrík about writing, memory, and why sometimes we need to go back in order to move forward.
