Theatre performance: Bartók and The Wooden Prince

For children in schools, we have prepared an interactive theatre performance Bartók and The Wooden Prince, bringing a world of imagination, music, and playful humour directly into the classroom.

Béla Bartók is a world-renowned composer – but he was once a child, too. Back when Bratislava was still called Pressburg, he attended school and was a very good student… perhaps too good. His exceptional talent explains everything. But little Béla had a very unusual friend: the Wooden Prince. That’s not a nickname – he was literally made of wood! And although it sounds unbelievable, both of them later became famous around the world, especially in the realms of music and imagination.

The performance Bartók and The Wooden Prince is a cheerful, energetic clown show full of acting, dance, singing, and live music. The production draws from drama education and works sensitively with the musical legacy of Béla Bartók.

The story of his childhood and artistic maturation comes to life through two iconic characters of the Italian commedia dell’arte – Harlequin and Columbina, who constantly bicker, complement each other, and create a variety of comic situations.

The performance was created as an adaptation of an original fairy tale by Margit Garajszki, dramatized and directed by Silvester Lavrík.

Creative team:

Scenography – Silvester Lavrík

**The Wooden Prince puppet is made from a century-old pine tree felled around the time of Bartók’s childhood. It smells wonderful and… it is quite stubborn.
