As part of the Waiting Places (Na počkanie / Waiting Places) project, a unique performative event by Romanian artist Alexandra Pirici, titled Invisible Monument, will take place on 18 June 2026 at 7:00 PM at the Memorial to the Martyrs in the Brezina Forest Park in Trenčín.
The work responds to a site associated with the tragic events of the Second World War. The Memorial to the Tortured and the Heroes’ Cemetery commemorate 69 victims of fascism—primarily resistance fighters and civilians—who were tortured and executed by the Nazis in the forests of Brezina between 1944 and 1945.
Invisible Monument takes the form of a poetic procession and live performance that creates a temporary architecture around the existing memorial through voice, song, and movement. The work explores the relationships between human memory, landscape, and the invisible connections that link the past with the present. It serves as a sensitive reminder of lives lost and their enduring significance for contemporary society.
The performance will feature Gabrielė Bagdonaitė, Zuzana Burianová, Viktoras Fedorenko, Tomáš Janypka, Katarína Jungová, Juraj Korec, Samuel Kosmál, Marta Poláková, Eva Priečková, Rozálie Stárová, Peter Šavel, Barbora Tomašková, Eva Urbanová, and Yurika S. Yamamoto.
Alexandra Pirici is among the leading figures of contemporary performance art. Her practice combines choreography, the body, and public space while addressing themes of history, collective memory, and relationships between human and non-human forms of life. Her works have been presented at the Venice Biennale, Tate Modern in London, SFMOMA in San Francisco, and the Centre Pompidou in Paris. In 2024, she presented the solo exhibition Attune at Hamburger Bahnhof in Berlin.
Following the performance, an informal opening reception will take place from 8:00 PM in the immediate vicinity of the site.
The project is curated by Jaro Varga and Audrey Hörmann.
Waiting Places (Na počkanie / Waiting Places) is a series of artistic interventions in public institutions and spaces that we visit every day but rarely wish to linger in. The project transforms waiting into an opportunity for observation, reflection, and the discovery of new perspectives through contemporary art.
