Denisa Lehocká’s work is characterized by a distinctive immersion into space and time. Her spatial collages and unique installations respond to specific environments—here, the underground industrial space of a former food storage facility beneath the FORMAAT Gallery near the train station. The installation is based on an organic expansion of objects into the environment, creating a complex, immersive bodily experience for the viewer, grounded in movement, sensory perception, and attention. The current exhibition project primarily engages with subjective memory and the artist’s personal story. Denisa Lehocká was born in Trenčín but had to leave it at a very young age due to her studies, feeling unprepared and forcibly removed from a safe environment.

In her work, she processes this traumatic experience, the feeling of uprootedness and emptiness, as well as the return to her hometown, which has since significantly changed. She reflects on alienation and the possibilities of overcoming it. The artist works with fragments of everyday life, combining them with natural and found materials that carry traces of the past and memory, such as plaster, textiles, stones, strings, or beads. She assembles them into open spatial structures, using layering and sedimentation as metaphors for deep time and memory. The resulting compositions appear as suspended movements or “petrified” moments of processes that may have occurred but seem to have come to a halt.

Lehocká creates slowly and with focus, through layering, drying, piercing, and stitching. This restrained rhythm stems from a deep interest in material processes that parallel natural physical changes in nature. Although the results are often subtle and understated objects, their creation is demanding and cannot be delegated, as the act of making itself carries meaning. This meaning does not arise instantly but is shaped over time and through the viewer’s experience, offering an open field of interpretation and an alternative model of perception. Minimalist seriality, the absence of a traditional pedestal, a restrained color palette, and compositions made from ordinary materials are deliberate strategies for reflecting on space and time. Lehocká’s installations represent a quiet and precise exploration of the relationships between form, space, intuition, and rationality. In this in-between space, the viewer becomes an active participant in a visual language that, instead of delivering fixed statements, offers an experience.
