Opening of contemporary art exhibitions at the castle

6 February 2026, 6:00 PM – Trenčín Castle

We invite you to the opening of three exhibitions that, as part of the Contemporary Castle project, will enliven the historic spaces of Trenčín Castle with contemporary art. Discover artistic interpretations of space, time, memory, and myth by internationally renowned artists whose works were created specifically for these unique spaces.

Yasuaki Onishi (JP): Crystalline Silence

The exhibition by Japanese artist Yasuaki Onishi transforms the Knights’ Hall of Barbora’s Palace into a poetic vertical landscape, where space, light, and emptiness become the main “materials.” Delicate transparent structures emerge from glue, gravity, and light as crystallized moments that explore the flow of time – not as a measurable quantity, but as a sensory experience in space. The installation creates tension between impermanence and the centuries-old architecture of the castle.

Carla Rebelo (PT): Barbora’s Thread

Portuguese artist Carla Rebelo presents a site-specific installation that subtly connects material, space, and memory in a smaller hall of Barbora’s Palace. She inserts fragments of the original wooden floor from the Merina textile factory into the historic interior, along with lines of threads and fibers that respond to light and the rhythm of the architecture. The work emerges as a “time outside of time,” in which the present quietly intertwines with the past through materials, shadows, and details.

The Well of Love Exhibition

This extensive multimedia exhibition centered on the legend of the Well of Love opens space for a deeper perception of echoes, layers of memory, labor, and myth that have accumulated in the castle spaces over centuries. Curator Ekmel Ertan presents four site-specific works by Turkish artists that work with sound, light, holography, and material. The exhibition is conceived to invite visitors to actively move through the space and follow its transformation along with their own experience.
