Summer Cinema is part of the Inclusion Film Festival project, which aims to bring topics of inclusion, diversity, and mutual understanding closer to audiences through films and discussions. Each evening offers a unique cinematic story and a conversation with guests who provide new perspectives on the world around us.
At the same time, we strive to make the Summer Cinema as accessible as possible to a wide audience. Screenings will be accessible for wheelchair users, and selected dates will include additional accessibility measures for people with hearing or visual impairments. Thanks to subtitles, the films will also be accessible to international visitors. Each screening offers different accessibility features. Information about this particular screening can be found in the Accessibility section below.
Can You Hear Me? (2025) – A Sensitive Spanish Film Opening a Window into the Deaf Community
The Spanish film Can You Hear Me?, acclaimed by both audiences and critics, explores the journey of a deaf woman preparing for motherhood. The film will be screened on 24 July at the Summer Cinema on Hviezdoslavova Street.
During her pregnancy, deaf Ángela struggles with fears about whether she will be able to bond with her daughter and navigate parenthood in a world designed by and for hearing people. This exceptional and moving film, which offers audiences a glimpse into the world of deaf people, won the Audience Award at the Berlinale.
Can You Hear Me? explores the complexities of relationships between deaf and hearing people. What tensions, connections, and forms of love exist between these two worlds? Why do people with normal hearing often fail to understand different experiences of everyday reality? How can we create more space for deaf people to express themselves?
These and other topics will be discussed before the screening. The discussion guests will be Michal Hefty, director of the civic association Myslím, which focuses on making cultural events accessible to deaf audiences, and Michaela Kolláriková, a cultural professional working in the fields of social inclusion, accessibility, and community care. The discussion will be moderated by cultural manager and co-founder of Košice’s Kino Úsmev, Barbora Andor Tóthová.
About the Film
Director Eva Libertad decided to tell the story of her sister Miriam Garlo, a deaf actress. The inspiration for the film came from an intimate conversation between the sisters, filled with fears and expectations. Miriam was considering becoming a mother – but in a world designed by and for hearing people.
To gain a deeper understanding of motherhood within the deaf community, Libertad spoke with deaf women who shared their experiences of pregnancy, childbirth, and raising children.
This film is not a statement about deafness. The main character, Ángela, is not intended to represent the deaf community as a whole, but rather a woman searching for her own path through motherhood while dealing with challenges emerging in her relationship. Ángela also has a complicated relationship with her parents and, above all, wants her daughter to know and love her.
Above all, Can You Hear Me? is the story of a woman who is ready for the world. The world, however, is not ready for her.
