Brazilian artist Rose Afefé is creating a new work in collaboration with residents of the senior care facility on Lavičková Street in Trenčín. Through a series of meetings, she opens up a space for memories of former homes – their colours, sounds, objects, alcoves and small details.

The residents of the senior care facility, the central figures of the work, are also bearers of the city’s living memory. They have been an active part of the city for many years, but today their health often prevents them from taking part in current cultural events.

From fragments of their stories, a delicate architecture of memory emerges. Two interconnected interventions – one in the vicinity of the senior care facility and the other in the centre of Trenčín – bring these unique memories into public space. Oral memory, which might otherwise disappear, is materialised here through an artwork. It preserves precious images of the city and of homes that may no longer exist, but which can still enrich our collective imagination.

Rose Afefé (*1988, Varzedo, Bahia) is a Brazilian visual artist whose work brings together memory, architecture, landscape and collective knowledge. Working with installation, painting and photography, she often draws on memories of her childhood and life in rural Brazil. Since 2018, she has been developing Terra Afefé in the Chapada Diamantina region, a human-scale micro-city built from earth using traditional adobe construction techniques and lime finishes. Terra Afefé is both an artwork and a living place, where architecture grows out of memory, community collaboration and a sensitive relationship with the landscape.
