Folklore, humor, puppetry, and friendship: Slovakia’s Trenčín will present a vibrant taste of the culture it will bring in 2026 in Finland’s Oulu. Trenčín will invite Europe to its own grand opening celebration in February 2026.

Slovakia’s Trenčín, which together with Finland’s Oulu will hold the title of European Capital of Culture in 2026, will be presented at the opening festival in Oulu during the weekend of 16–18 January 2026. Oulu will launch its cultural year in the Arctic atmosphere of the North, and Trenčín will join with its unique preview of what the Slovak programme will offer. Trenčín will host its own opening weekend from 13–15 February 2026.

Authentic folklore, lively humor, and a marionette fairy tale

The Ihku Bar in the centre of Oulu will transform into a lively Slovak stage—an unconventional venue brought to life by a diverse programme from Trenčín and the surrounding region. Performers will showcase the many forms of culture that Trenčín will offer throughout the cultural year.

The folklore ensemble Nadšenci will bring the energy of Slovak folklore—dance and music rooted in the traditions of the Trenčín region, refreshed with a touch of experiment and humor. Their performances will radiate joy that both local and international audiences will love.

Pavol Seriš, a mime and performer known for his original style, will entertain audiences with a blend of physical theatre, pantomime, and stand-up comedy. His improvised one-man show will set audiences laughing and demonstrate that humor can connect people without the need for words.

Families with children will be drawn to the marionette performance Čert Kolofón—a fairy tale about a devil sent to Earth to deal with naughty children. The show offers humor, suspense, and a hint of romance, appealing to audiences of all generations.

When cities meet in a glass: the taste of friendship

One of the more unconventional highlights will be the original Mocktail Trenčín 2026—a non-alcoholic cocktail that symbolically connects two cities, two cultures, and two journeys. The flavors of Trenčín and Oulu will blend into a drink inspired by local traditions—the Slovak version scented with herbs from healing springs, capturing the atmosphere of the city in a single drop.

Voices for cultural Europe

Trenčín will also take part in an international discussion on visions for cultural projects in a changing geopolitical context. Together with other cities and initiatives, it will open questions about the value of openness, democracy, and cooperation within Europe’s cultural space.

Trenčín invites Europe to its opening weekend

From 13–15 February 2026, Trenčín will welcome thousands of visitors to its own opening weekend. The entire city will transform into a living stage celebrating culture in all its forms.

Friday’s activities will focus primarily on schools, with programmes entering classrooms, courtyards, and libraries. In the afternoon, communities and hundreds of volunteers—the living heart of Trenčín 2026—will take the spotlight.

Saturday will begin with street breakfasts, continue with a carnival procession, and culminate in the evening gala programme Manifest Trenčín 2026, launching a year full of discovery, art, and collaboration.

Sunday will be dedicated to families, offering theatre, music, poetry, and shared experiences for children, seniors, and all who are curious.

Trenčín and its region – a place with the potential for discovery

Trenčín—a city of approximately 55,000 inhabitants located in western Slovakia near the Czech border—will demonstrate that even a mid-sized city can tell great stories. The castle, the Roman inscription, the underground scene, and contemporary art will come together in an exceptional cultural year.

The Trenčín region, rich in castles, spa towns, and natural beauty, will provide a stage for culture that connects past and present while opening important topics such as sustainability, equality, and community cooperation.

The title of European Capital of Culture will bring prestige to Trenčín, but above all it will create space for rediscovering itself. The city will awaken curiosity, inspire new perspectives on the world, and show that even a small city can generate powerful cultural waves.
