Trenčín is breaking records: both April and May 2026 saw record-high visitor numbers

Trenčín, as the European Capital of Culture 2026, is enjoying an exceptionally successful season. Both April and May saw a significant increase in visitor numbers and overnight stays, and the city broke its previous records in both months. 

April 2026: the longest stays in the town’s history 

According to figures from the city of Trenčín, the number of overnight stays in April 2026 rose by 41.8 per cent compared with April 2025. The number of overnight stays by foreign visitors rose even more significantly, by 48.1 per cent, confirming Trenčín’s growing international appeal in the year in which the city holds the title of European Capital of Culture.  

At the same time, the city recorded its longest-ever average length of stay for visitors – specifically 2.61 nights, compared with 1.94 nights in April 2025. Visitors are therefore staying in Trenčín significantly longer than in the past – exactly as the city had set out to achieve as part of its tourism development strategy.  

The number of overnight stays in Trenčín in April surpassed even the city’s most successful April to date – 2019, when the city recorded 8,396 overnight stays during that month. In April 2026, there were 4,224 more overnight stays.

May 2026: an all-time record for both visitor numbers and overnight stays  

May brought an even more impressive record. The city had never before recorded such high numbers of visitors or overnight stays as it did that month – a clear sign that the title of European Capital of Culture is genuinely attracting new people to the city. 

According to figures from the city of Trenčín, in May 2026, compared with May 2025, the number of overnight stays rose by 50.8 per cent and the number of visitors to the city by 64.9 per cent. These are the highest monthly figures ever recorded in Trenčín since visitor numbers began to be tracked.

An upward trend in the first five months of the year  

The growing interest in the city is also confirmed by the figures for the year to date. In the first five months of 2026, the number of overnight stays rose by 31.1 per cent compared with the same period last year, and the number of visitors by 25.3 per cent. Trenčín is thus continuing a long-term upward trend, which accelerated even more significantly in April and May. 

Foreign markets: Austria has overtaken Poland 

Data on foreign visitors to the Trenčín district also revealed some interesting trends. The number of visitors from Austria saw the sharpest rise, up by 59.5 per cent compared with 2025. Austrian visitors have thus overtaken Poles to take fourth place in terms of visitor numbers to the Trenčín district. The Czech Republic and Germany continue to occupy the top two spots among foreign visitors staying in the Trenčín district. Hungary is in fifth place, having also recorded an increase compared with 2025.

Trenčín is using its title as European Capital of Culture 2026 as a catalyst for a year-round cultural programme, which is bringing new events, exhibitions and projects to the city. The figures for April and May show that the rich programme on offer is directly reflected in the actual interest shown by visitors – both domestic and international – who are also staying in the city for longer. The city of Trenčín will continue to monitor and evaluate visitor numbers throughout 2026 in the context of the European Capital of Culture project.
