On the occasion of International Children’s Day, the city of Trenčín and the Trenčín 2026 – European Capital of Culture project, together with other partners, are preparing a series of events aimed at engaging the youngest residents of our city, along with their parents and grandparents.

Together, they can visit a theatre, enjoy a literary afternoon, and actively celebrate Children’s Day in nature – all in a playful way that blends fun and discovery.Children are an important part of our city and the Trenčín 2026 project – not only as spectators but also as active participants and future creators of culture. Through play, music, and storytelling, we want to show them that culture is a natural part of life they can enjoy, develop, and co-create, says Soňa Straková, a member of the Trenčín 2026 team.

Thursday – Literary Afternoon

On Thursday, May 29, 2025, at 4:00 PM, the event “I Read, I Write, I Sing” will take place at Mierové Square in Trenčín. It supports children’s creativity and their love for literature and music. The event is organized by Trenčín 2026 and the Michal Rešetka Public Library in Trenčín.

“Let’s All Read – Reading is Cool” is the title of a motivational competition for primary school pupils (grades 1–4), celebrating its 60th anniversary this year. It promotes reading habits, information literacy, and introduces the world of books in a fun and engaging way. Throughout the school year, children visit the library, explore its spaces, and participate in creative workshops, author readings, exhibitions, and educational activities – including working with 3D printing, Ozobots, and Micro:bits. The library will recognize the most active participants who not only borrowed books but also actively participated in the life of the library.

The development of literary talent and imagination is further supported by the I Write, You Write, We Write” competition for older primary school pupils. In 2025, the competition is held in three age categories, with poetry and prose as genres. This year’s optional theme was the personality and legacy of Ľudovít Štúr. A jury of regional writers and educators selected the most interesting entries, and the winning authors will be celebrated during the event at Mierové Square.

The musical part of the event will feature children’s choirs from the region:

  • Bosé osy, from Dezider Kardoš Art School in Bánovce nad Bebravou – a representative choir with achievements both locally and abroad, led by conductor Simoneta Adamková.

  • Osminky, from Karol Pádivý Art School, Svinná branch – a young choir founded in 2022 that has quickly made a name for itself.

  • Voiceana, from Karol Pádivý Art School in Trenčín – the “younger sister” of Osminky, founded in autumn 2024, already impressing audiences with its expression and harmony.

Come support young talent, discover the beauty of language, and enjoy an afternoon full of inspiration and creativity.

Saturday – Children’s Day at Brezina

On Saturday, May 31, 2025, starting at 2:00 PM, a rich program will unfold in the Brezina forest park, at the Cherry Orchard area and Tarzania.

Rescue workers, police officers, a garbage truck, an animal farm, sports competitions, a range of fun challenges, traditional crafts, circus workshops, and exploration of Brezina’s flora and birdlife will be present.

The best way to enjoy Children’s Day at Brezina is to combine it with a walking trip – avoiding traffic jams and congestion. Parking at Brezina is very limited. However, the area can be accessed from several directions and is easily reachable with strollers, scooters, or bicycles. The Matúš Čák tourist train will also be running.

During this fun-filled day, a chillout zone will offer space for rest and discovery. Children will learn more about the European Capital of Culture in a playful way.

The Happy Audio interactive workshop will transform everyday groceries into musical instruments. Come and try playing music on vegetables!

Sunday – The Boiled Egg Doesn’t Sing

On Sunday, June 1, 2025, at 4:00 PM, celebrate Children’s Day with an original artistic experience at the Cultural and Creative Centre Hviezda.

The musical-dramatic fairytale “The Boiled Egg Doesn’t Sing”, written by Hana Naglik and Ľuboš Bernáth, based on a story by Ľuboš Bernáth, Jordana Palovičová, and Svetlana Waradzinová, is designed for children under 10 and their parents.

Inspired by traditional Slovak rhymes and verses, the story follows a young boy named Matej, who – through an unusual friendship with an egg and an early bird – learns the importance of having a true friend. Together with a black raven and other (not only) birds, they go on adventures through the four seasons.

The tale playfully conveys essential values like empathy, sharing, helping, and listening.

Performed by teachers and students from the Faculty of Music and Dance at the Academy of Performing Arts (VŠMU) in Bratislava.

Admission is free.
