Summer Open-Air Cinema: Arco (2025)

Summer Cinema is part of the Film Festival of Inclusion project, which aims to bring topics of inclusion, diversity, and mutual understanding closer to audiences through films and discussions. Each evening offers a unique cinematic story and an opportunity to meet guests who provide new perspectives on the world around us.

At the same time, we strive to make the Summer Cinema accessible to the widest possible audience. Screenings will be accessible to wheelchair users, and selected dates will include accessibility measures for people with hearing or visual impairments. Thanks to subtitles, the films will also be accessible to international visitors. Each screening offers different accessibility features. Information about accessibility measures for this event can be found in the Accessibility section below.

Arco (2025) – What happens when 10-year-old Iris sees a boy in a rainbow cape fall from the sky?

Iris lives with her little brother and a robot who takes care of them both. It walks them to school, reads them stories, prepares breakfast… Their parents have to work far away from home and can only join family lunches as holograms. Iris is bored and misses her parents. Her loneliness is interrupted by an unusually bright rainbow in the sky. That rainbow turns out to be a boy from the future.

Arco comes from a time when time travel is common—but strictly forbidden for children. Travelling between the future and the past requires a diamond, which Arco loses when he falls to Earth.

Iris sets out to help Arco find the lost diamond so that he can return home among the clouds. However, three mischievous brothers are also searching for the diamond, and the quest becomes even more complicated when a fire breaks out in the city. Yet Iris is finally no longer bored, nor does she have to worry about taking care of her younger brother. Most importantly, Arco is the best friend she has ever had. Could Iris travel to the future together with Arco?

The pre-screening discussion will feature Jakub Spevák, Programme Director of the Fest Anča International Animation Festival, and Erika Paulínska, the festival’s Project Manager. The discussion will also include Michal Hefty, Director of the civic association Myslím, which focuses on making cultural events accessible to deaf audiences. The guests will be interviewed by emerging producer Tereza Kravecová.

ABOUT THE FILM

This poetic sci-fi odyssey by French director Ugo Bienvenu is a story about hope, friendship, and faith in the future at a time when the world faces ecological crises and wars.

The feature-length animated film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival and received numerous awards, including a European Film Award and an Academy Award nomination.

The names of the main characters were not chosen by chance. Arcoiris is the Spanish word for rainbow—a rainbow as a symbol of hope.
