Summer Open-Air Cinema: Summer School, 2001 (2025)

The Summer Cinema is part of the Inclusion Film Festival project, which aims to explore themes of inclusion, diversity, and mutual understanding through films and discussions. Each evening will bring a unique cinematic story and conversations with guests who offer new perspectives on the world around us.

At the same time, we strive to make the Summer Cinema accessible to the widest possible audience.

Screenings will be accessible to wheelchair users, and selected dates will include accessibility measures for people with hearing or visual impairments. Thanks to subtitles, the films will also be accessible to international audiences. Each screening offers different accessibility features. Information about the accessibility measures available for this event can be found in the Accessibility section below.

Summer School, 2001 (2025) – What does it mean to have two homes? And what if they are thousands of kilometres apart?

The first Czech-Slovak Viet-film, Summer School, 2001, tells the story of the Vietnamese community living and working in the Czech Republic with lightness and humour. The marketplace in Cheb is full of Adidas tracksuits with four stripes and children watching over market stalls while their fathers gamble and their mothers try to navigate Czech bureaucracy.

This is also the reality of 17-year-old Kien and his bright red hairstyle. After spending ten years in Vietnam caring for his grandmother, he returns to his family in the Czech Republic. Instead of a warm welcome, he finds himself ironing Pokémon images onto T-shirts and struggling to master Czech grammar before the new school year begins. However, during summer school, Kien grows close to his teacher, and while flirting by the lake, a secret surfaces that turns life at the marketplace upside down…

In a discussion moderated by Kristína Milová from the Institute of Participation—an organisation that strengthens dialogue between citizens and local government in Trenčín—visual artist and author of Everything That Connects Us: The Story of a Slovak Vietnamese Woman, Kvet Nguyen, and sociologist Elena Gallo Kriglerová, who focuses on the inclusion of minorities and people with migrant backgrounds, will discuss the importance of building communities, cultural identity, and finding a sense of home in new places.

About the Film

Vietnamese director Dužan Duong, based in the Czech Republic, offers an authentic insight into the Vietnamese community, which has become an integral part of modern Czech history. Through an unconventional cinematic approach, the film explores a generation caught between two worlds, the clash between old and new, and the search for one’s place in the world. This poetic portrait of a Vietnam uprooted from its origins won the Czech Lion Award for Best Screenplay.
