From Soil to Story. Fashion with Meaning.
LUMó is a year-round programme that, during Trenčín – European Capital of Culture 2026, maps, connects, and revives the entire life cycle of a garment – from the soil where the fibre grows to the hands that transform it into a story. It draws on Trenčín’s rich textile heritage and on local communities that have maintained their relationship to craft despite the decline of large-scale industry. LUMó is not (just) a fashion show. It is a living process that bridges generations, supports creators, and forges new connections between tradition, innovation, and everyday life.
What can you experience as part of LUMó?
Exhibitions, discussions, shows, workshops, a Summer Fashion Academy for young people, public sewing sessions, community activities, and international collaborations. The main programme will unfold throughout 2026 and culminate in the final exhibition From Soil to Story – telling the story of fashion as a mirror of relationships, culture, and value-based design. Pilot events will be introduced as early as autumn 2025.
Who is LUMó for?
For everyone – whether you’re 5 or 75. For seamstresses and designers, students and seniors, artisans, teachers, children, fashion enthusiasts, amateurs, and professionals alike. LUMó connects the past with the future, local stories with the European context, and technical skills with a personal connection to materials.
Where will LUMó take place?
At the heart of the programme will be the LUMó HUB – a new space in the centre of Trenčín, opening in February 2026. It will serve as an open workshop, a base for school groups and the public, and a venue for exhibitions and meetings. From the HUB, activities will naturally expand into the streets, schools, communities, the wider region, and online.
How can I get involved?
Follow the Slovak Fashion Council website and the social media channels of SFC and Trenčín 2026. From August 2025, we will publish the first open calls and opportunities for public participation. If you create, sew, repair, teach in Trenčín – or are simply interested in fashion – get in touch. We are looking for allies and stories.
Why was the LUMó project created?
LUMó was established as one of the flagship projects of Trenčín – European Capital of Culture 2026, in cooperation with the Slovak Fashion Council. It is part of the Field of Action framework, which connects culture with the economy, crafts, education, and new technologies. Its aim is to show that fashion can be a tool for change – if we return to it with respect, curiosity, and the awareness that behind every piece of clothing is someone’s story. You can read more here about why SFC has been part of Trenčín – European Capital of Culture 2026 from the very beginning.
