Exhibition Painted with Light II

Painted with Light II is a loose continuation of the exhibition of the same name, featuring artistic photographs focused on traditional dress in the Myjava region from the late 19th century to the mid-20th century.

Once again, the exhibition presents forms of clothing that are today often overlooked or already forgotten. This time, however, the focus is primarily on the eastern part of the Myjava Hills (from Stará Turá, Lubina, Krajné, and Hrachovište), where a different type of dress was worn than the one typically associated with Myjava. Several photographs reference period studio photography or historical painting, yet in all of the works the distinctive authorial style of photographer Boris Németh clearly prevails.

Since its inception, the Centre for Traditional Culture in Myjava has been dedicated to collecting, documenting, and studying traditional dress. Its professional staff members, Lucia Franická Macková and Peter Obuch, decided to share knowledge about this heritage through the artistic language of contemporary photographers. At the same time, strong emphasis is placed on historical accuracy. Each photographic project is therefore preceded by thorough preparation, which consistently leads the authorial team to delve deeply into sources and archives and to ask questions they might not otherwise have considered. The result is the revival of garments worn again after more than a hundred years.

Boris Németh is a Slovak photographer and educator based in Bratislava. Since 2006, he has worked as a portrait and reportage photographer for the weekly magazine .týždeň and has been devoted to long-term authorial projects. Since 2013, he has been an external lecturer in reportage photography at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design (VŠVU) in Bratislava. He is the recipient of several significant awards both in Slovakia and abroad. He runs a studio at Nová Cvernovka, where he focuses on portrait photography, authorial projects, and courses centered on communication in portraiture.
