ROMANS AND SLOVAKIA: Not All Roads Led Only to Rome…

Following its success in Bratislava, the exhibition Romans and Slovakia comes to Trenčín in an adapted version, enriched with unique stories and discoveries connected to the city, its surroundings, and the famous Roman inscription. On the rock of Trenčín Castle, you can still see today a remarkable Roman inscription from 179 AD — a unique trace left by the soldiers of Emperor Marcus Aurelius during the Marcomannic Wars.

It is here in Trenčín, where the worlds of Rome and the Barbaricum once met, that the exhibition reveals the history of this region from the 1st to the 4th century. Romans and Slovakia tells the story of a land that stood on the frontier of the Roman Empire for four centuries — a place of trade, cultural encounters, military campaigns, and diplomatic exchanges.

Visitors can explore original artefacts ranging from military equipment and everyday objects to exceptional finds from princely graves. Set within the unique space of the medieval barracks at Trenčín Castle — once home to soldiers — an even older world comes to life: the world of legionaries, merchants, craftsmen, and tribes that both cooperated with and opposed Rome.

The exhibition presents the latest results of archaeological research and offers a contemporary perspective on the Roman presence in Slovakia.
