We are delighted to present the programme of the 6th edition of Legends Come Alive, Bojnice’s popular summer theatre event.
This year, you can experience the event on Saturday, 18 July, and Saturday, 15 August, with performances taking place throughout the town from 5:00 PM.
Launched in 2021, this unique project celebrates the history of the region through a series of engaging theatrical performances. As visitors stroll through the streets of Bojnice, they encounter stories inspired by the history of the castle, the town, and the surrounding region. Each performance tells a different legend, allowing audiences to explore the town at their own pace.
Admission is free.
This year’s legends include:
- The Bojnice Feather-Picking Gathering – a humorous theatrical scene revealing how much gossip, laughter, and intrigue could unfold during the traditional communal practice of feather picking.
- The Legend of the Black Lady – discover the story of the mysterious woman in black who has long been said to haunt both the castle chambers and the area below the castle walls.
- Baťa in Bojnice – inspired by the year 1938, when the Baťa company purchased Bojnice Castle and its spa. The story takes place in the garden of Hotel Lipa, the town’s oldest operating hotel.
- The Women’s Revolt – this year’s new production, telling the story of a historic dispute between the Bojnice estate and the townspeople of nearby Prievidza.
- Corvinus’ Ring – an old local legend about the tragic love between a young prince and an ordinary girl, complicated by Queen Beatrice and the scheming castellan Póky.
- Bojnice Superstitions – a light-hearted look at everyday life in Bojnice, from local taxes and aristocratic manners to ghosts, fairies, and old folk beliefs.
- Cruel Anna – the story of Anna, who remarried after the death of Stanislav III Thurzo.
- The Last Provost – dedicated to Karol Anton Medvecký, the last provost of Bojnice, as well as an ethnographer, historian, and politician.
- The Petrified Egg – inspired by the discovery of two skeletons and a petrified egg at the bottom of the castle well during its last reconstruction.
The project received the Creative Achievement of the Year 2021 award from the Regional Cultural Centre in Prievidza and was recognised in 2025 as the Top Tourism Product of the Trenčín Region 2024 by the Trenčín Regional Tourism Organisation.
Over its first five editions, Legends Come Alive has welcomed more than 25,000 visitors from across Slovakia and abroad. Thanks to the annual renewal of the programme, every edition offers new stories and experiences, making it a sustainable and continually evolving cultural attraction for both the town of Bojnice and the wider region.
This year’s event is once again supported by Trenčín 2026 – European Capital of Culture, the Trenčín Self-Governing Region, the Ministry of Tourism and Sports of the Slovak Republic, and the Upper Nitra Regional Tourism Organisation – Bojnice, allowing visitors to enjoy the programme free of charge.
Visitors can also navigate the event using the Stopy zážitkov (Trail of Experiences) mobile app, developed by the regional tourism organisation. The app provides an intuitive guide to all performance locations and replaces the printed event map, although paper maps will still be available for those who prefer them.
