Divadlo dNO is a young independent theatre company from Námestovo that creates original productions with a focus on local themes that resonate with broader social issues. The production HRANICA / GRANICA is set against the backdrop of a forgotten historical event from 1920 – the division of the Orava region between Poland and Czechoslovakia. The production moves beyond the documentary boundaries of this event and directs attention towards universal questions. Through associative and non-linear imagery, absurd humour, folklore, political grotesque and the tools of propaganda, the creators explore what a border means to a person – whether geographical, linguistic, national, personal or internal.
The theme of the breakdown of international and interpersonal relations is timeless and, at times, almost unbearably reminiscent of the polarisation and social division of the present day, when we are constantly fighting over “our truth and our people”. HRANICA / GRANICA is an invitation to empathy, perspective and critical thinking – not through lecturing or moralising, but through an unsettling, musically compelling and visually powerful theatrical experience.
The production Granica received the Award for Best Direction, the Award for Best Scenography and the Award for Best Male Performance at the Scénická Žatva 2025 festival. It was presented to audiences at the Pohoda Festival, FAD Košice and Belopotockého Mikuláš, where it received the festival’s main prize.
