Rudolf Moško: 100

Rudolf Moško 100 – marking his centenary. Rudolf Moško (1926–2019) is one of the most significant figures of modern Slovak art and an indispensable part of Trenčín’s professional art scene. His centenary is an opportunity to re-evaluate his work, place it in the broader context of 20th-century Slovak painting and recall an artist who was able to transform landscape into an inner space – a place of memory, energy and silence. Moško’s work was marked from the outset by two themes that accompanied him throughout his life: landscape and the human figure. His early period explored form, composition and colour in a realistic-impressionistic spirit, gradually moving away from description. In the 1960s, under the influence of European tendencies, his painting sharpened – cubist-inflected structures, geometrisation of space and strong stylisation of the figure appear. His female figures from this period are monumental, solid, as if carved from a single block. The landscape, however, gradually became his most important creative space. From the early 1970s a characteristic style settled in his painting: simplified, robust forms, a rhythm of rounded massifs and valleys, rich greens and blues that became his typical colour chord. Moško did not transcribe landscape but translated it into a language of shapes and colours that reveal its inner architecture. His paintings are simultaneously ascetic and sensual, rough and gentle, realistic and symbolic. In the 1980s he also turned to still life. Objects of everyday life are transformed into poetic metaphors. In the early 1990s his painterly language shifts again – soft curves give way to stricter, more geometric forms; village settlements, rhythmic houses and churches enter the picture. Moško was also the author of numerous monumental architectural works. He remains an artist who was able to transform landscape into an inner space – a place where one can pause, breathe and perceive the world in its purest form. Curator: Radka Nedomová.
