UNT Dechovka – an American university band with a Czechoslovak heart.
UNT Dechovka Band is a remarkable ensemble based at the University of North Texas in the USA – the first and only university brass band of its kind in America dedicated to Czech and Slovak wind music. The band was founded in 2004 with the support of the Czech Educational Foundation of Texas. Its members are university students who chose to explore and carry forward the musical and cultural heritage of Czechs and Slovaks deep in Texas. The first lineup studied under the renowned Moravian brass band Stříbrňanka, a collaboration that continues with the new student lineup formed in 2006. The mission of UNT Dechovka Band is to bridge borders – of countries, languages and music itself. Through brass band music it connects people, cities and cultures, bringing Czech and Slovak musical tradition to audiences across the ocean.
