Non-Places by Slovak composer and saxophonist Miroslav Tóth, performed by the Polish string quartet NeoQuartet, brings together contemporary classical music, experimental sounds and electronics in an unusual combination. The work was inspired by abandoned, unfinished or unused buildings and spaces that reflect our relationship with the landscape, society and the environment.
The music was created in dialogue with specific places – from a nuclear power plant in Austria that was never put into operation to the decaying Machnáč spa house in Trenčianske Teplice. Each of these locations has left its own sonic imprint on the compositions.
NeoQuartet, a Polish ensemble specialising in contemporary music and in exploring new sonic possibilities of string instruments, will bring its own interpretative approach to the work. In the unique setting of the Trenčín Synagogue, the music will become a reflection on the world we are leaving behind.
The concert will offer an intense listening experience in which contemporary music meets history, architecture, and current social and environmental issues.
