Modern humans have always strived to gain and maintain a high degree of control and governance over the natural world. The joint exhibition by artists Juraj Rattaj (SK) and Martin Chramosta (CH/CZ/AU) uses spatial installations to explore the human desire to appropriate nature.
In his work, Juraj reflects on these processes within the space of the zoo as a modern heterotopia, blurring the boundaries between wilderness and captivity, nature and culture, life and death. He questions the notion of untouched nature and reveals hidden biopolitical dynamics of knowledge, power, and control.
Through the metaphor of “foam in the cage,” Martin points to a broader socio-political context and demonstrates the limits of any regime of power to subordinate, imprison, or control. He shows that forms are restless and elusive—they escape and expand.
Foam in the Cage is both a literal description and a blurred metaphor, suggesting the futility of trying to capture something that is inherently ungraspable. The works combine a love of freedom with a dark foreboding, balancing between a dystopian atmosphere and a sense of escape.
