Cultural Evenings at Župný dom: Trenčín Choir

The Trenčín Choir was established in 1980 through the merger of two Trenčín choirs – a teachers’ choir and a workers’ choir – thus continuing the city’s rich tradition of choral singing. For more than four decades, the choir has brought the joy of making music together to concert halls, churches, public spaces and festival stages both at home and abroad.

The choir’s repertoire is diverse and spans a wide range of genres – from Renaissance music and works by classical composers to contemporary vocal music. Slovak folk and national songs arranged by renowned composers also hold an important place in its repertoire, alongside vocal music from various nations. The choir focuses primarily on a cappella singing, which highlights the power of the collective voice and the harmony between individual singers.

Its members are predominantly amateur musicians from different professions and generations, united by their interest in music and the joy of singing together. Throughout its existence, the Trenčín Choir has performed at numerous concerts, competitions and festivals and has taken part in international exchanges both in Slovakia and abroad. From 2003 to 2022, it was also a co-organiser of the Advent festival Daj Boh šťastia tejto zemi (May God Grant Happiness to This Land), which brought together choirs from Trenčín, the surrounding region and abroad.

Following many years under the artistic direction of PaedDr. Jozef Vakoš, PhD., Mgr. Viktória Andó took over as the choir’s director in 2024. Under her leadership, the choir continues to develop its tradition and bring choral singing to new audiences.

The concert in the atrium of the newly opened Župný dom offers an opportunity to experience the power of the collective voice in a space that is now opening its doors to the city’s cultural life. The programme will feature works spanning different periods and musical traditions, from the classical choral repertoire to Slovak songs.
