Nora Ikstena (LV): Soviet Milk
Three generations of women, three different destinies shaped by a difficult era and complicated relationships. The alternating narration of mother and daughter begins and ends during the Soviet period in Latvia. At the centre of the story is the mother, an exceptionally gifted doctor and intellectual, who refuses to breastfeed her newborn daughter so as not to poison her with her own unhappiness. Years later, she is sent into forced exile in the countryside, where their roles are reversed and the daughter becomes the caregiver of her own depressed mother.
