What does it mean to be part of a world we long to belong to, and yet remain an outsider? The autobiographical production Everything Is B by Katarína Poliačiková, followed by a discussion, explores questions of identity, origin, belonging and unequal opportunities in the world of contemporary art.
Žilina City Theatre: Everything Is B
In this original autobiographical project, visual artist and writer Katarína Poliačiková explores her family history as well as her own pull towards New York. The story of her great-grandparents, who emigrated to America in search of a better life at the beginning of the 20th century, intertwines with the experience of a young Eastern European artist on the contemporary New York art scene. The production examines the desire to fit in, social anxiety, cultural barriers and the invisible rules of the art world, where success is shaped by connections, background and social capital.

Discussion: Being Inside and Not Belonging
How has the position of artists from Central and Eastern Europe on the international art scene changed since the 1990s? The accompanying discussion will build on the themes of the production and address unequal access to opportunities, networks and institutions, expectations associated with Eastern European origins, and what it means today to succeed in the “big art world”.
